Ha Long Bay: The Icon of World Heritage
As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Ha Long Bay is world-renowned for its emerald waters and nearly 2,000 towering limestone islets. This legendary landscape, sculpted over millions of years, offers a surreal atmosphere where ancient caves and hidden grottos await discovery behind every karst formation.

Lan Ha Bay: The Hidden Gem of Serenity
Often called the “quiet sibling” of Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay offers a more pristine and peaceful experience with over 400 lush green islands. Its defining feature is the abundance of secluded, white-sand beaches tucked at the base of limestone cliffs, creating private paradises that are perfect for swimming and relaxation.

This bay is a dream for active travelers, offering crystal-clear lagoons ideal for kayaking through the “Bright and Dark” caves. Without the heavy traffic of larger cruise ships, Lan Ha Bay allows you to connect deeply with nature and witness the authentic, slow-paced life of traditional floating fishing villages.
Cat Ba National Park: The Jungle Heart of the Island
Cat Ba National Park is a UNESCO Global Biosphere Reserve and a sanctuary for some of the world’s rarest species, including the endangered Cat Ba Langur. This dense tropical rainforest offers a dramatic landscape of rugged limestone mountains and ancient Kim Giao forests, serving as the “green lung” of Northern Vietnam.

For adventure seekers, the park is famous for its trekking trails that lead to Ngu Lam Peak. Reaching the summit rewards hikers with a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the island’s endless jungle canopy and the shimmering ocean beyond.
Trung Trang Cave: Nature’s Underground Masterpiece
Known as the “Stone Gallery,” Trung Trang Cave is a 300-meter-long geological wonder filled with thousands of shimmering stalactites and stalagmites. Naturally ventilated to remain cool at 25°C year-round, the cave features intricate rock formations, meticulously carved by water over millions of years into the shapes of lions, eagles, and mythical figures.

Beyond its geological splendor, the cave holds deep historical significance as a former naval headquarters during the resistance wars. Walking through its narrow, glittering passages offers a unique blend of prehistoric natural art and heroic local history.
Thien Quoc Mau Ha Temple: The Centuries-Old Guardian of Cat Ba
Situated at the mouth of Trung Trang Cave within the Cat Ba National Park (Tran Chau Commune), Thien Quoc Mau Ha Temple stands as a profound symbol of the island’s spiritual resilience. The temple’s name, “Thien Quoc Mau Ha,” translates to “Heavenly Mother of the Nation,” a title honoring the Goddess who protects the territory and provides shelter for its inhabitants.

Nestled within the island’s primeval forest, the temple features simple yet authentic architecture that harmonizes seamlessly with its natural surroundings. This peaceful sanctuary invites visitors to slow down, reconnect with their inner calm, and appreciate the delicate balance between spiritual devotion and Cat Ba’s untouched landscape.

The logistics of moving from the Hanoi Old Quarter to the boat and then to Cat Ba Island sounded exhausting on paper, but the team handled it flawlessly. The limousine was actually a luxury van with massage seats. Lan Ha Bay is stunning and way less crowded than the main Ha Long area. The only heads-up is that the Wi-Fi on the water is basically non-existent, so just unplug and enjoy the jacuzzi.

Our guide Nam was fantastic, especially keeping the group together during the national park trek. Do not underestimate that hike! The last stretch to Ngu Lam Peak requires you to use your hands to climb over tree roots, and you will definitely sweat through your shirt. But the view at the top is the best photo op of the entire trip. The huge seafood feast back at the local restaurant totally made up for the burned calories.

We booked this for our honeymoon because it included the luxury Panorama yacht without forcing us to sleep on a boat, as my husband gets claustrophobic in tiny cabins. The afternoon tea party on the sundeck was gorgeous. The hotel in Cat Ba was clean and modern with great AC. The high-speed canoe ride back to Tuan Chau on day two was unexpectedly thrilling and a great way to end the trip.

I was really nervous about the food because I have a strict gluten allergy, but the chef on the boat and the restaurants were completely prepared for it. They made me fresh spring rolls while others had fried ones. Kayaking around the Cai Beo floating village was incredibly peaceful, and we even saw a local family feeding their fish farm. A very authentic, unpretentious experience.

Solid 2-day itinerary if you want a perfect mix of relaxing and actually doing things. The Trung Trang cave is well-lit and easy to walk through, unlike some others in Vietnam that feel like a tourist trap. One quick tip: bring plenty of strong bug spray for the day two forest hike. Overall, excellent value for the money, and the transportation was always on time.
